01
What you get
A dedicated server that keeps running when nobody is online.
Since 29 July 2026, Build 42 is the stable version of Project Zomboid, multiplayer included. Our server installs the default branch of the official dedicated server (Steam app 380870), so you get Build 42 without entering a beta branch. With auto-update on, the server pulls patches itself on the next restart.
The world persists while your group is offline. Zombies keep migrating, crops keep growing, and nobody has to leave their PC running as host.
02
Hardware and ports
The values our template starts with.
How much memory you need depends mostly on players and mods. Build 42 needs noticeably more memory than Build 41, especially with long mod lists.
Ports are preconfigured and shown in the customer portal. You do not need to open anything.
| Value | Template |
|---|---|
| Memory (minimum) | 4 GB |
| Memory (recommended) | 6 GB |
| Slots | 4–32 |
| Port Game (UDP) | 16261 |
| Port Steam (UDP) | 16262 |

Settings
The essentials in the portal, the rest in the files.
In the customer portal you set the basics. Everything else lives in the server files, which you edit in the file manager or via SFTP: the server config in Zomboid/Server/<servername>.ini and the sandbox rules in <servername>_SandboxVars.lua.
- Server name (internal)
- Admin user name
- Admin password
- Auto-update

Worth knowing
The most common questions from groups starting out.
- Check mods for Build 42
- Many Build 41 mods do not work, or only partly work, under Build 42. Check in the Workshop whether a mod is marked for Build 42 before adding it to the .ini. An incompatible mod is the most common reason a server fails to start.
- Adding mods
- In the server .ini, Workshop IDs go into the WorkshopItems= line and mod IDs into the Mods= line. The server downloads them on the next start.
- Set the sandbox before the first start
- Settings like zombie population, infection or loot rarity work best in a fresh world. Change SandboxVars.lua before your group starts playing if you can.
- Back up before big changes
- In the portal one click turns on a daily backup, kept for seven days. Before a big mod update, a manual backup is still worth it.
